Can magnesium supplements delay labor?
I went into pre term labor at 32 weeks and they stopped it with magnesium sulfate. Horrible stuff! I am now 37 weeks and having horrible braxton hicks and frequent bowel movements. It’s like labor wants to start but won’t. I am taking magnesium 250mg. 2 pills once or twice a day for foot cramps. My OB told me to months ago. I was about to cut my feet off they hurt so bad. It is the only thing that helps. Could this dose delay labor? I am afraid to take it, but sometimes I have to!

I would talk to your doctor and see if there is something else you can take for the pain relief. Also ask if magnesium is related to delaying your labor. You are still only 37 weeks, so it’s normal to be getting braxton hicks at this stage. full term is 39-40 weeks. Your body is preparing for labor. I think once you go in labor nothing can stop it from coming. The baby knows when it’s ready to come out.
No this would not delay your labor. Usually they willl give a higher dose of magnesium sulfate over a period of time to slow down or stop labor. If you are worried about it I would call your doctor or if you can’t get a hold of him/her call your labor and delivery floor and ask them what you should do. On a side note… 36 weeks is considered full term so even if you deliver the baby now he/she will be fine.
