Potassium and Being Sick Archives

Could I still have a kidney infection?

On the 4th of July I got a really bad stomach virus. I had severe dehydration due to vomiting, and was hospitalized because my potassium was so low. On the 6th I started having really bad pain around my kidneys, but the hospital I was at refused to do a urine test, even though my urine was extremely dark. Even when IV fluids managed to lighten it up to more of an amber, it was cloudy, and I noticed blood. The pain got worse until I was finally discharged and saw my regular doctor on the 9th. She did a urine test. I couldn’t provide enough for a culture because I had already gone earlier that morning, but what I did provide her with was full of red and white blood cells.

I ended up going to urgent care on the night of the 9th because the pain was just unbearable, and I got a round of IV antibiotics and was put on a different oral antibiotics. I had my follow up appointment today, and they didn’t take any urine, but I’m still having flank pain pretty intensely on the right side, and my back on that side is actually warm to the touch. I have 8 more days on the antibiotics, and its upsetting my stomach, so the doctor is considering lowering the dose and extending my time on it.

My question is, could I still have a kidney infection if my urine culture comes back clean? The culture on the 6th was clean, but then there was blood present a few days later. I’m worried that when I go in for my follow up, they’ll do a culture, and it’ll come back clean, and then I won’t know why I’m still in pain.

I’m still getting the cold sweats, and its painful to the point where even walking around is a little difficult. I’ve had kidney infections before, but never one this painful. My urine isn’t brown anymore, thankfully, but like I said, the pain is still pretty intense. The hospital took an x-ray, and no stones were visible.
I’m not interested in remedies, home or otherwise. I’m wondering if I could still have an infection should my urine be retested and come back clean.

The first time I had a kidney infection my urine was clean even though I felt sick, and three days later I had a retest and it was negative. So I’m just wondering if its a possibility for my test to come back negative, but me still have an infection.

So, information on infections please, not treatments.
Can you get viral kidney infections?

(Please stop telling me what I should take, I’ll let my doctors take care of the medication part, I’m just curious between appointments if there is a chance its bacterial and won’t show up, or if it could be viral.)

Dehydration?

o Why is water essential to health maintenance?
o What are the functions of water in the body?
o What happens to the body when it does not get the water it needs?
o Compare and contrast how different electrolytes—sodium, potassium, and chloride—
function in the body.
o What effects can alcohol and caffeine have on hydration levels in the body?
o What steps can people take to ensure they do not become dehydrated?

I’ve been in the hospital having many tests. I went in due to extreme fatigue/rapid heart rate. which increased over 2 months time. I tested positive for the d-dimer test (all subsequent clot testing of heart/lungs/legs were normal). I was low in potassium, but have managed to increase my levels with 5 days of supplements. Also, ketones in my urine at 60 (normal range from 0-9). I retook that test today but no results yet. I have not been dieting/vomiting etc. My blood sugars are normal, no diabetes. The other symptom I have is a burning (icy/hot) sensation which varies in intensity throughout the day on my entire body skin surface. I have kidney stones and liver hemangeomas but kidney/liver tests showing normal. I’m under no extreme/unusual stress…..but this last December my ex-husband (father of my son) died by suicide. I was under extreme stress for a few weeks.
If you have any ideas of what may be happening, I’d love your opinion.

i am having muscle spasms in my legs they feel weak at times also my arms. However, i do work for a utility company. I work outside 5 days a week i jump fences/gates, a lot of walking, bending and etc. While i am working i sweat a lot and at the time i was not drinking enough fluids. So it went on for a couple of days and i drunk some powerade and the weakness went away but the spasms continued. Next, i started eating bananas and the spasms stopped. Once i stopped eating the bananas and get home from work the spasms would return. DOES THIS SOUND LIKE DEHYDRATION OR LOW POTASSIUM? ANYONE PLEASE HELP!! THANKS

Help on why my Stomach cramps while running?

I’m leaving for BCT in 9 days… I’ve passed my PT test w/flying colors and now i’m just running to possibly lower my score & get use to running all the time…
Last week, I ran 3 miles one day, 2 miles the day after that, and 3 miles the day after that…
Recently, when I’ve been running, I can only run 1.5 miles and my stomach cramps severely (it feels just like menstrual cramps) and I have to stop running and I’m usually doubled over and vomiting… I can’t even get 2 miles ran in 1 setting now… I dnt know what’s wrong with me..
Like I said, I leave for BCT in 9 days.. I dnt want this to interfere w/my enlistment in the Army… But @ the same time I dnt want the Army to kick me out b/c I can’t fulfill the requirements… Cuz I have really good days where I kick ass, then I have days like I’ve had these past 2 days where I get 1.5 miles done and can’t go any further… It’s very frustrating..
Ok, so here’s some of my background: I’m only 4 lbs overweight (military standards); I exercise 4-5 days a week; eat healthy; drink only water and milk (All sodas and juices are cut out); I dnt eat out; and I’m known to be anemic.. I take vitamins and potassium pills.. I dnt eat b4 I run and if I do I give it atleast 2 hrs to settle..
Any advice would really help me!! Thanks so much!!

I have been sick for almost 2 months, headache, diarrhea, nausea, throwing up, back and stomach pain, bladder pain, peeing like crazy, pressure in my stomach, exausted, If I do something simple like cleaning my cats litter boxes and dishes I am so exausted the next day I can’t do anything. I have been to the ER 4 times this month. 1st time they thought it was my gallbladder, took blood and xrays gave me morphine sent me home with a bladder infection and antianxiety meds. didn’t get better 2cnd time I was put on an IV for dehydration, and given a prescription for different antianxiety meds cuz I was allergic to the first one, and a script for potassium. 3rd time i was given fluids againand an inhaler for a respitory infection. 4th time got a CT scan and got fluids and morphine got diagnosed with gallstones and another bladder infection. I am NOT getting better and feel like they are not listening and I feel I need to be admitted for testing and to get better. How do I get them to listen?
My Dr. referred me to a surgeon and they are removing my gallbladder in a few weeks.

Please help me with this I am so sick!?

Addison's disease in dogs.?

my dog had been vomiting for about a week, yesterday (12.17.08) i took her to the vet, thinking it was just some kinda bug, and id get antibiotics to treat her and it would be over and done with, i didnt think it was to serious because her behavior had not changed.
when i took her to the vet, the vet told me he was gonna take a blood sample and run some tests because shes so old, he wanted to make sure it was nothing serious. and hed call me tomorrow morning(12.18.08) and let me noe the results of the test.
so this morning he called me and told me i needed to bring her in right away because he believes she may have a very serious condition/disease, and she is at high risk. at the time i couldnt understand what he had said, but he said serious, high risk, and disease. so i took her almost immediately to the vet.
he explained it briefly to me,
he said her sodium and potassium levels are extrememly high and very low from what they should be.
and he told me he believes it might be addisons disease and he is almost positive, but wants to run another test to be sure,
he also said it is rare, and that it is because of the adrenal glands/kidneys.
he wants me to read up on it, so i can better treat her, understand why i am treating her and more about it, and so him and i can both be on the same page.
he has not diagnosed her with it yet, he is suposed to call me tomorrow morning and let me know then we will take it from there.
but i want to read up on it a little bit and find out more about it,
im not sure what site i can read it on, and trust that the info is acurate.
so im asking for anyone who has possibly experienced this or has info or a site i can read.
plz & thank you.
