Potassium and Being Sick Archives

I really need advice, I’ve seen 2 doctors this week and no onehelped me but my symptoms keep getting worse. I’m a 29 year old mom with 2 small kids at home. 6 months ago I was admitted into the hospital for a 5mm kidney stone and they found I still have 3 left in my right kidney. These cause me pain quite often so my urologist had me on hydrocodone alot. At one point I was on it for a month straight (urologist’s orders) to stay on top of the pain and keep me out of the er until the other 3 stones pass. Well, due to the fatigue I felt (making my job as a mom more difficult) and the constipation, I decided to stop taking it. The withdrawls were terrible. I was referred to pain management where the doctor there immediately assumed I was a druggie (despite the fact that I see just 2 doctors and use1 pharnacy) and rather than putting me on a medication that was either non addicting or something that is easier to manage, he put me on suboxone. Although it eased my other withdrawal symptoms, I threw up for the 1st 3 days, then was in the process of passing a 3mm stone and nothing helped for the pain because if the suboxone so I spend days in bed crying hysterically. So these stones are my only medical issue, except for being diagnosed with Grave’s Disease in 2004 and is completelty under control.

So here’s the scary part for me. On Tuesday I woke u with terrible upper stomach pain so I was up from 2-4am. The next day my husband noticed I looked very pale and I was having a hard time holding a conversation with him. I fell asleep sitting up numerous times and at one point spilled juice on our brand new couch. Fell down2x while walking as if my legs gave out from under me.My husband took off of work for the first time in 10 years because I was feelimg so crummy. And I want to make it clear that I did see my GP this week who said my urine didn’t look too bad by suggested I go back on hydrocodne since she felt my weakness and vomiting could be caused by the pain. But I’m not in that much pain, I tried explaining that.

Well yesterday I went outside for the furt time in a few days and 3 minutes into my car ride broke out into a huge rash, with thousnads of bumps covering all of my skin exposed to the sun. As soon as I got to my sister’s house, 10 minutes away, my mom took one look at me and called an ambulance. By the time they got there my eyes were swollen shut. All they gave me was 35mg of benadryl and a steriod and the hives went away pretty quickly. They took some blood and kept me there 2 hours and let me go around 2pm. The only thing that came back abnormal on the bloodork was a slightly koe potassium levek, ehivh they hve me 4 pills for. On the walk back to to car, the hive s started to come back again, so it’s definately heat related.

I’m still dizzy today and have double vision. I’m planning on spending yet another dat in bed, does anyone have any idea on what can be going on with me or what could be goin on with me all of a sudden?

(almost done) As a surprise, my husband picked me up some icecream and a movie. Well I just remember his franticky trying to wake me and I coundn’t speak. I was slurrying my speech and he wanted me to go back to the er. I begged for him no to ecpecially since we have a 1 and 4y/o with all of thodr nasty bugs going arpunf now.

Could my doc have caused my miscarriage?

I have a question -

I was in the hospital on Wed. for dehydration due to being so sick w/my pregnancy, (at that time I was 14 wks pg. This is my 6th pregnancy and my 1st miscarriage). My doc gave me bag after bag after bag of glucose water in my IV and later on blood was drawn for various reasons and a nurse came in and stopped my IV mid-bag and hung a dif. one. I asked about it and she said it had potassium in it and when I asked her why they weren’t finishing off the other bag first, she said it was b/c my blood sugar level was elevated. It was 338!!! And I am NOT a diabetic, nor have I ever had gestational diabetes w/my other 5 pregnancies!!! As soon as they stopped the glucose drip, my levels came soaring down immediately. About an hr later it was in the 160’s and an hr after that it was 109 and has been normal ever since. That evening the doc couldn’t find my baby’s heartbeat so she wheeled in an ultrasound machine. My baby had died!

I was told by someone else that high blood sugar can cause a miscarriage, is it possible that my doc caused the miscarriage by not regulating how many bags of sugar water I got? Or did the baby just die on his own? (Yes, it was a boy…I got to see/hold him). The last time we heard the heartbeat was a week ago, haven’t tried to hear it again until this last Wed. when we found out it was gone…

I have been awaken up out of sleep while sleeping on my back and I’ve sat in a chair and these unbelievable pains will come out of nowhere. It is so painful I have screamed my bloody head of.One time my husband witnessed my toes being pulled in different directions.I don’t know what the heck is going on..I have eaten banana’s thinking it’s a potassium problem and it seems like they bring it on.I’ve asked my husband & son to bring me water. Is this maybe caused from dehydration or something. Can someone help explain?

chemistry help..?

please help me finish this..
thank you so much..

Viral rash leading to joint issues?

I totally stumped several doctors, hospital & specialists. I wonder if any of you have ever seen this. Last year I drove home to visit (5 hour drive). Within 24 hours I got a fever of 105. I slept for about 24 hours. I woke up in severe pain in my joints & covered in rash. I was vomiting a lot. My kid’s doc (who was local) said it was probably viral.
I returned home & a week later fever & spots returned. I still had joint pain/swelling & needed my knee drained. I went to an ER. They found my electrolites low & I was dehydrated. They tested me for a lot of things including scarlet fever. Everything came back negative. They said the rash was viral, gave me IV fluids/drained my knee/steroid shots. They sent me home with potassium & said to drink gatorade. The rash eventually went away. Joint pain comes (for days at a time) & goes - esp. in times of stress. I have seen 3 other drs. including rheumotoid doc with NO answers. Before I go see yet another doc - any idea what this is?

My fiance is 30 years old and has always been healthy, all of a sudden this year he gets sick and has been sick for 6 months now. We have come to find out that he has blood in his urine, when it was about the first 2-3 months there was no sign of blood but his urine was a different colour then normal we thought maybe it was just dehydration. I told my fiance to go to the doctor but he was to stubborn to go and he let it go until it got worst. Once the problem got worst and he was actually pissing out blood he finally went to the doctor.

He has seen at least 4 different doctors and has had 2 ultrasounds that had come back normal and showed nothing on them, he has had blood work done several times and all has come back normal, and he has had a CT scan done with the dye and without the dye and it has also come back normal, he has also had a Cystoscopy done and that also came back normal.

The blood work showed this:

Anyway there is his blood work results and as you can see there are a couple of things that are a little low and a couple of things that are high. That is because of the problem that he has which we do not know what it is.

Other then that all of his blood work cam back normal as well as the rest of the test that I have mentioned they have all come back normal, showing nothing wrong.

He is healthy but what we can’t figure out is where is the blood coming from in his urine if there is nothing wrong with him.

The one doctor had also said that his kidneys are working but not the way they should be so they are a little on the abnormal side.

My fiance feels dizzy, can’t think straight, sometimes he looks white as a ghost, and he is also a bit anemic from having this problem, not only that but he is cold a lot.

So if all of his test are coming back normal then what could this be?

Could it be a kidney disease of some sort or could it be excessive exercise he use to do befor all of this happened?

He doesn’t have no kidney stones, no tumors, no cysts and etc, so what could it be?

It is really freaking me out can someone please help me and tell me what it could possibly be when everything is normal, other then his kidneys being a little abnormal.

Everytime the doctors take a urine sample blood always shows up in the urine, but when he goes to the bathroom to urinate his pee is all blood.

I am just praying that it is nothing to serious and not only that but I am afraid of losing him if the doctors don’t find out what it is and catch it before it is to late.

Can someone please help me?
To Aidani,

Hi, It is bad and very stressful, I worry about him all of the time wondering what it could be.

I just want to say thank-you for your sympathy comment and I am hoping for the best. The guy that made a comment after you did really upset me and got me crying.

I am even more scared of losing him now hearing that he may have Lupus but I hope he doesn’t have it.

Anyway thank-you again for your sympathy comment, you are a real sweetie and I really appreciate what you had said.

Take care, from Debbie!

My grandmother who is 84 years old is normally pretty active (still works part-time) and who lives alone had a recent abnormal lab value. She had a creatinine of 2.4 and BUN of 50. I am scared for her. We discovered this values after taking her to the doctor for a congested cough and some disorentation. She was diagnosed with "a bad case of bronchitis". She has a history of diabetes and hypertension. She has no symptoms related to her kidneys. Do these levels get this elevated from just dehydration or does she has something underlying? As far as I know all of her electrolytes were okay with the expetion of a slightly hight potassium. If anyone, can give me some advice or an opinion on her lab values I would appreciate it. Thanks

Strange muscle cramps…..?

I have been getting a lot of muscle cramps lately, in different parts of my body, and have no idea why. I get them in my feet a couple times a day, I wake up with those awful calf cramps that kids get, I get them in my hands, my arms, seriously all over the place. I eat plenty of bananas, so it’s not low potassium. One thing that may provide a clue is that I had a hysterectomy/oopherectomy about ten years ago. I have been on the same dose of estrogen the entire time which I found out recently is way too low. I don’t take progesterone. I’m 36 y.o. Also, I have a few other health problems. Fibromyalgia and a gastrointestinal problem that causes severe nausea and vomiting daily. Eating is a huge problem, so (per my doctor) I started smoking pot for appetite and nausea. When I have pot to smoke I can eat just fine and have no nausea, marijuana is a miracle drug, excuse the digression. I know it’s a lot of info, but does anyone have any idea why I am having such bad cramps?

A. Prolonged vomiting and dehydration are known to lead to deficiencies
B. Deficiencies occur due to excessive losses rather than to insufficient intakes
C. Chronic use of certain diuretics and laxatives is known to lead to deficiencies
D. Dietary deficiencies are common due to availability of only a few good food sources

Really sick and they won't admit me!?

I have been sick for almost 2 months, headache, diarrhea, nausea, throwing up, back and stomach pain, bladder pain, peeing like crazy, pressure in my stomach, exausted, If I do something simple like cleaning my cats litter boxes and dishes I am so exausted the next day I can’t do anything. I have been to the ER 4 times this month. 1st time they thought it was my gallbladder, took blood and xrays gave me morphine sent me home with a bladder infection and antianxiety meds. didn’t get better 2cnd time I was put on an IV for dehydration, and given a prescription for different antianxiety meds cuz I was allergic to the first one, and a script for potassium. 3rd time i was given fluids againand an inhaler for a respitory infection. 4th time got a CT scan and got fluids and morphine got diagnosed with gallstones and another bladder infection. I am NOT getting better and feel like they are not listening and I feel I need to be admitted for testing and to get better. How do I get them to listen? I can’t take care of my 2 year old his dad has been doing almost everything and I can’t keep going on like this I know I need admitted for tests and treatment how do I get them to admit me?
not pregnant they checked and I have been on Depo for 3 years they said it’s the gallstones but don’t want to admit me the only time I feel any better is after they give me big bags of IV fluids and even then I am still very tired and weak.. How can I get them to listen and admit me so I can get some relief? I can’t even function I am so tired and sick.
I am not being poisoned they checked my blood for everything and I am eating the same things as my son and his dad and they are fine. but my thing is I need to be admitted and they won’t so how can I get someone to listen to me?
Seen my Dr. 3 times for follow ups. They are attributing it to anxiety because I have OCD, but I am really sick. I don’t go to Dr.s I never usually get sick. My mother and son’s father know I am sick and have wondered why they won’t admit me. I go see my Dr. again this week and need suggestions on how to get him to listen and admit me for tests and treatment.
sorry to keep posting but my friends mom is a nurse and even she said they should admit me and probably aren’t because they think I am exaggerating even though I can barely walk.
