Cola is causing muscle problems:

In people with hypokalemia, a drop in blood potassium levels results in problems with vital muscle functions. Symptoms can range from mild weakness to serious paralysis, say Greek researchers who conducted a review of people who drank between two to nine liters of cola a day.

Two of the patients were pregnant women who were admitted to hospital with low potassium levels. One was a 21-year-old woman who drank up to three liters of cola a day and complained of fatigue, appetite loss and persistent vomiting. An electrocardiogram revealed she had a heart blockage, and blood tests showed she had low potassium levels, the researchers explained in a news release.

The second pregnant patient, who’d consumed up to seven liters of cola a day for 10 months, had low potassium levels and was suffering from increasing muscular weakness, the researchers noted.

Both patients made a rapid and full recovery after they stopped drinking cola and took oral or intravenous potassium. The case studies are described in the June issue of the International Journal of Clinical Practice.

"We are consuming more soft drinks than ever before, and a number of health issues have already been identified including tooth problems, bone demineralization and the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes," and there’s increasing evidence that excessive cola consumption leads to hypokalemia, Dr. Moses Elisaf, of the University of Ioannina, said in the news release.

Elisaf said the three most common ingredients in cola — glucose, fructose and caffeine — can contribute to hypokalemia.

"The individual role of each of these ingredients in the pathophysiology of cola-induced hypokalemia has not been determined and may vary in different patients," Elisaf said. "However, in most of the cases we looked at for our review, caffeine intoxication was thought to play the most important role. This has been borne out by case studies that focus on other products that contain high levels of caffeine but no glucose or fructose."

However, "caffeine-free cola products can also cause hypokalemia because the fructose they contain can cause diarrhea," Elisaf said.

anyone know someone with bulimia?

its a very sad disease….i feel it shows weakness and very low self esteem.

Here’s a little snipet from the internet. This might not cure you of bulimia, but maybe it will your severe stupidity and ignorance:

“Frequent vomiting brings up stomach acid into the mouth, eroding teeth’s enamel. Cavities and gum infections are common in people with bulimia. The stomach acid also irritates the esophagus, producing heartburn, and the salivary glands, making them swell.

Bulimia harms the entire body. People with bulimia also tend to be constipated from laxative abuse and improper nutrition. Bulimics typically eat high calorie, low nutritional value foods like breads or ice cream. As a result, they may be undernourished and have dry skin, hair, and nails. Bulimia causes mineral and vitamin deficiencies and can lead to chronic kidney problems, including kidney failure. Dehydration is also common in people with bulimia. Undernourishment and dehydration lower the body’s electrolytes, causing an irregular heartbeat or heart problems. The effects can be serious. When potassium drops severely, it can cause the heart to stop, resulting in death.

Bulimia affects people’s mental and emotional well-being. These problems can come directly from bulimia, or bulimia may be a response to the other problems. People with bulimia may be tired and unable to perform at peak levels from the mental and physical stress bulimia puts on the mind and body. Depression, low self-esteem, and extreme perfectionism are common in people with bulimia. Bulimia can cause tension with family and friends, interrupting the lives of people with the disorder.

The most severe effect of bulimia is death. Ten percent of people with bulimia eventually die from its effects, usually from the electrolyte imbalance caused by dehydration.”

Paints a pretty picture, doesn’t it?
yes it is.very sad.hope she continues to do well!!!
natile and andrea- i am untitled to my opinion.i can say what i want.to me its for attention… and that right there is sick…very sad.there are other ways to get attention.sorry my opinion. to bad if u dont like it!!

My dog was hospitalized for 4 days on IV fluids, she would not eat and would vomit if she did, when I would visit her she would eat but vomit after I left. Her BUN and creatine were elevated, and WBC, ALT and Potassium. I seen she was so nervous to be away I took her home on friday. She has not vomited once at home and is eating k/d,drinking water, normal urine and stool, she is playful been on walks everyday and running around with her toys and my other dogs. No signs of dehydration, but she is shaking. She is a three year old jack russell and has always shaked but not as much. Could it be a side affect from the antibotics she is taking? Kidney disease is possible but repeat testing next Saturday after one week of meds. Would she have done so well the past three days if she is in kidney failure? waiting on Addisons results also.. I dont know what to think. She was retested this Saturday and her creatinine dropped to 2 from 3.5 BUN little change. The Vet said as long as the Creatinine improved over the last 12hrs he was not as worried, Potassium was normal also but WBC still slightly elevated. Anyone been through this?? I am so upset, I love my baby and will pay or do anything if she has a chance. She was hospitalized for dehydration due possible obstruction from digging in gravel, she has no previous symptoms of kidney disease and blood work last year was normal.
My dog did recieve a injection on thursday for Addisons? could this be why she is feeling better?

7 weeks and low potassium?

7 weeks and low potassium?
I am 7 weeks pregnant, and I had blood work the other day which came back and said my potassium levels were low. My doctor asked if I was vomiting and I said no, he asked if I had any diarrhea and I said no. He prescribed to me potassium chloride for 10 days. I have severe fluid retention in my legs, and I wondering if anyone knows if that could be related to the potassium levels. I did a bit of looking around on Google, and I saw a few sites mentioning kidney function and potassium levels. Has anyone else had this issue?
I know why he asked If was vomiting and had diarrhea
I have researched and low potassium can cause fluid retention
I am not vomiting, I have said this in original question

i havent drank caffeine in awhile since i overdosed one day along with getting dehydrated, malnourished, and an electrolyte imbalance (goes with dehydration. i believe potassium was the lowest because the entire 3 months i got heart arrhythmia’s) which lasted for a good 3 months. When i was drinking 2-liters of pepsi i never experienced getting light headed like i did today so i was just wondering what it could have been. also, my heart wasnt palpitating like i thought it would

Chem Question 10 points will be given to best answer?

Each 200mL of an electrolyte soultion designed for treating dehydration contains 0.47 g of sodium chloride (NaCl), 0.30 g of potassium chloride (KCl) and 3.56 g of glucose (C6H12O6).

a) Calculate the concentration of each compound in g L-1

b) Calculate the molarity of each compound

c) Calculate the concentration of potassium ions in the solution, in mol L-1

d) Calculate the concentration of chloride ions in the solution, in mol L-1

If you choose to answer this Question can you please show all your working out so i can learn from it. 10 points will be given to the best answer. thanks
