Potassium Side Effects Archives

My granddad hasn’t been drinking much fluids for nearly a year now and he’s been taking 2 different diuretics for several months. He has a lot of the symptoms of volume depletion but his doctor has said that he would have low potassium levels on his blood tests, is this correct?

I was at the movie theatre and I suddenly noticed my arm was starting in have a vague aching/tingling sensation. My heart was beating normally but then there was a dull ache in the right side of my chest. It’s still there. While I was driving home my fingers were going numb.

The ache in my arm is more like discomfort than pain, but it’s in a specific spot in my arm, and the ache in my chest is still there. I have no other symptoms except fear.

I have been had two charlie horses within a week, where my muscles tighten involuntarily. I’m very recently trying to recover from bulimia… I’m wondering if my potassium levels are low. I’m afraid… what should I do? I cannot visit a doctor - no insurance. Should I take potassium supplements for a while/

What could be causing these symptoms?

Right, I’m a 17 year old male (reason my av and name is female is cos I’m a pre-op male-to-female transsexual).

I’m a caffeine addict and often drink 2litres of Pepsi Max a day.

Due to the major flaw that is obvious in my lifestyle (excessive Pepsi Max consumption), I take precautions to balance my diet, have plenty of calcium to keep strong bones (particularly my teeth) and to keep my body neutral.

Also take in plenty of potassium prevent things like muscle spasms and diet caused paralysis.

I have plenty of exercise and tend to have a very healthy body.

My Doctors know of my lifestyle(one of my doctors is one of the best respiratory doctors in the UK) and so far they can’t fault it, I’m well informed about things and keep myself in good shape, I pride myself in my health.

Dentist is the same, I have a flawless record at the dentist and a perfect set of teeth, except for the one they refer to as erupted, when I first started drinking Pepsi Max in excessive amounts, I wasn’t as well informed back then and one of my teeth got badly corroded, hasn’t had anymore damage suffered in a good few years though and other than being thinner than the rest, not really noticeable.

I also do well to keep myself hydrated and make sure I’m taking in all my daily vitamins, I generally eat well but i’m under weight and have been for my entire life. It’s risen suspicion as to whether my Mum feeds me with my doctors, lol.

I also sleep well too and lead a fairly happy life. Only things that I suffer from are things I can’t avoid(difficult family situation).

Also, finally I’m a brittle asthmatic, worse case of asthma, but I’m extremely healthy for someone who is brittle asthmatic, that is from my doctor.

Anyway, lately I’ve been feeling extremely weak, shaky and although I have the energy extremely tired and feeling very hungry some days being unable to full myself up, others I’m feeling like I’m gonna hurl when I’ve barely eaten.

What could be causing these symptoms?
I know some of the symptoms can be blame on caffeine but not all of them, plus, half of these are symptoms I’ve only ever suffered when ill.

I’ve been hooked on caffeine from 12years old and i’ve been fine for them 5 years and i know the long terms of caffeine and these aren’t them.
Pepsi Max is sugar 3 and five years addicted, symptoms like that turn up sooner into the addiction.

Also I have aquagenic uritica(allergy to water).
Mild allergy to water btw.
hyperglycemia is too much sugar, Pepsi Max is SUGAR FREE.
I like caffeine for other effects and Pepsi Max is a pass time for me, plus you can’t get PURE caffeine anywhere, it’s a highly toxic white powder.

‘m 19 years old. i was originally 125 pounds. i got pregnant in December and lost 10 pounds. i weighed 117. i don’t know what i am now but i’m guessing the same weight or lower. i went to the doctor for numbness and tingling. they did a blood test and i have a vitamin deficiancy b12. not getting enough calcium and potassium (i think.)

i was put on vitamins. they did an EMG nerve scan on my arms for the numbness and tingling and it came back normal. They said if it continues to go back for an MRI of my back.

i’ve been smoking since i was 16 idk if that has anything to do with it or not. my fingertips get numb and i stay cold a lot. i am tired easily too. my mom passed in june of cancer.

do you think i have cancer? or am i just really unheathly?

where is my next step to take? should i be wieghing my self.

by the way- i am going to try to put on weight. i DO NOT have an eating disorder. i wanna look healthy.

what r these symptoms

Unusual symptoms, very confused?

Hi, I am having unusual symptoms dizzy, distorted vision, pounding headache, extreme nausea, fatigued, get overheated very quickly that lasts from 15 minutes- 3 days and subsides for a while. At that time I am very irritable and feel very disoriented. The ER has run tests that include: monitoring my heart, blood pressure, blood sugar, thyroid, potassium, any bleeding in stool. I am trying to get a CT or MRI? and no one,my PCP or neurologist seems to give a care, I am so tired and dizzy it is hard to get out of bed. How can I get and MRI from an ER without a dr’s con cent. Also, does anyone have any other ideas of what could be going on? Thanks, Autumn

What are the dangers of low potassium?

I suffer from bulimia but am just starting treatment.
So I quite often used to find I was extremely weak and unable to move with a lot of pain and feeling very tired. Although I never visited a doctor or got my potassium tested I am sure that must have been the problem.
Do youthink this is correct?
If so, would those symptoms indicate it was severe or just mild?
If this happens again should I call my doctor?
What are the risks of low potassium?
do have a very low heart rate and often get weird feeling in my chest.

Hi guys, a little help please!!
For years I’ve had spurts of ‘tiredness’ but this year suddenly my vision is constantly blurred, I can’t concentrate, my mouth is dry no matter how much I drink. I sweat a lot at night and if I don’t eat breakfast by 12:00 I’m so drained that I can’t concentrate for the rest of the day. I also binge bc I ‘m so energyless I want to get anything in my mouth… then everything really starts to go haywire, I can’t think, my vision gets even more blurry..

I’ve been to the doctor, we’ve discovered I’ve got low iron, potassium, B12. But I’ve been taking the supplements, etc, for over a month and a half, and my symptoms are still quite prevalent.

I was wondering if there was anything else I should be looking for: I was thinking I am very dehydrated, the problem is I’ve upped my drinking to up to 15 cups a day ( about 3 litres ) but this hasn’t made any difference! I’ve gotten a blood glucose test as well, but this hasn’t shown any deficiencies…

I know I may sound like a hypochondriac, but these symptoms really affect my every day living! It may still be the iron/b12/potassium levels are still not up yet… but I should be feeling better!!

If anyone can help/suggest anything it would be really helpful!!
Thanks!!
By 12:00 - that means on the odd occasion I miss breakfast… this is not the norm!! I usually eat breakfast and a snack by this time… however I know many people who eat a tiny snack or nothing at all and they are starving by then and fully able to function… while I’m dead for the rest of the day!!

I’ve also only been drinking that much because nothing else has helped.. at least this helps somewhat.. and eases the blurryness… I sweat a lot and this could be why…

And yes, the doctors do know everything about me.. but they say it’s nothing.. that’s why I’m asking here, just in case there is something else!!

Thanks for your input…

I had blood work done last week because I’ve been dealing with a variety of troubling symptoms (fatigue, weight loss, digestive problems, low-grade fevers, just to name a few) for almost 4 months now. My first doctor was ignoring me so I sought a second opinion, and she sent me for the blood work.

My results came back mostly fine, except for elevated levels of potassium in the blood. I am already being scheduled to see an internist, so please don’t tell me "go see a doctor" because I am. I was just wondering if anyone else has had similar findings in their blood results, and what you were diagnosed with? Or if you know what causes high potassium levels in the blood?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Do I have low potassium?

Just wondering from the last question I asked when people said my foot/hip cramps could be due to low potassium, so I just wondered how low it could be? I just researched it and found that I have many of the symptoms…. here are my symptoms:
-Occasional pain in abdomen
-Cramps in my foot which mean I can’t move it for a few minutes.
-Headaches
-Heart palpitations
-I get quickly depressed and tired

So… do I have low potassium? And is it a "doctors quick" situation?
Thanks Morna! Ya made me smile! xx
