Sodium and Salt Archives

Do you prefer Top Ramen or Manchurian Ramen?

They’re both 100% crap food, I’m WELL aware of that and I try to stay away from it as much as I can, but I’m in college and you know how it is - sometimes you gotta resort to good ol’ ramen.

So, have you noticed any difference between Manchurian and Top? If so, which one do you prefer? For some reason Top is 25 cents more expensive for a 6-pack at my local Safeway, which obviously makes absolutely no difference to me and I haven’t noticed any real difference, but… Just a fun fact.

Please, don’t answer things like they are both horrible junk food, etc. - um, I know that I’m not an idiot. And I realize it’s like comparing apples to apples (if apples were cholesterol and sodium-rich junk food), but if you have a preference, please let me know.

Thanks.

This is a work in motion so it is subject to improvements, but I am working on this and this is what I have so far. I would like to know what everyone thinks.

My hopes for Barack Obama’s presidency:

Before the end of Barack Obama’s 2nd term the following things will happen:

Gas Taxes will be a litre or about per gallon. This will help us to fight global warming and encourage people to take public transportation.

A 20% VAT will be imposed on ALL goods, including food and clothing.

There will be a 60% income tax on ALL people with a government cap on income set at ,000. The taxes will go towards providing medical care and housing for the needy.

A minimum income will be set for those on welfare at ,000. No longer will those on welfare have to suffer while greedy rich people live happy, healthy lives. The age of the wealthy is over and the poor, meek, and those who do not work for a living will inherit the earth.

Any and all dissent will be silenced immediately. The dissenter’s career will be destroyed, they will be labeled a "racist", and thrown in jail for a minimum of 5 years per offence.

The people will be required to give 10% of their incomes to humanitarian aid, both local and foreign.

Retrograde taxes will be imposed on all those who previously made more then 0,000 a year.

The government will sponsor and handle the upkeep of all museums, national forests, and wildlife reserves with tax payer money.

Guns of ANY kind will be banned PERMANENTLY. Possession of any gun will result in a ,000 fine and a minimum of 5 years in prison for each offence.

The government will impose a cap on how much each corporation can make in a year. There will be no more making millions or billions on ANYTHING.

The government will regulate how much sodium, sugar, and fat is allowed in food in order to reduce costs to the government health care plan.

This is just the beginning. I have so many more hopes for Obama’s presidency, but I haven’t thought of them all yet.

What are your thoughts?
Oh yeah, and all immigrationally challenged people will be given amnesty.

Coca Tea? anyone ever had this?

I found this blog last night http://coca-blog.blogspot.com
I was wondering if any of you people have ever tried coca tea and if i should get some?

the blog reads: "According to research, the chemical composition of coca leaves is more complete and rich in calories, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fibre, ash, minerals (calcium, phosphorous, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium, ascorbic acid, etc.) and vitamins A, C and E than other food plants and infusions in common use such as coffee, tea, camomile, etc. Thanks to this research, it is nowadays recognized that the coca leaf contains more proteins (19.9 per cent) than meat (19.4 per cent) and far more calcium (2,191 per cent) than condensed milk, and that it is richer in vitamin B-1 (276 per cent) than fresh carrots"

Sounds like a good idea to me… does anyone have anything to add to this?
" The Coca leaves available through this site are the same type of leaves being used in the popular carbonated beverage Coca-cola. Coca-cola was introduced in 1886 as "a valuable brain-tonic and cure for all nervous afflictions". Coca-cola was promoted as a temperance drink "offering the virtues of coca without the vices of alcohol". The new beverage was invigorating and popular. Until 1903, a typical serving contained around 60mg of cocaine. Sold today, it still contains an extract of coca-leaves. The Coca-Cola Company imports eight tons from South America each year."

Does anyone know of a good diet cookbook?

My husband is seeing a doctor for high blood pressure. His doctor wants him to lose weight and exercise. He has been exercising 3 to 4 times a week and is trying to limit calories. He went to see a nutritionist/dietitian today. It was a total waste of time and money. All she could recommend is what a diet book that my husband has been using already. Cut out certain foods and exercise, which my husband was already doing. She said to limit sodium intake also. This is information that I already knew as a former nurse aide. I also have been trying to lose weight, but my problem is related to hormone changes. My husband’s mother had a thyroid problem and couldn’t lose weight. She saw dietitians, joined weight watchers with no success. Her family doctor found out that her metabolism was out of whack. This is why she couldn’t lose the weight. She was given medication and she started losing weight. I’m thinking this is what the problem might be with my husband. Sometimes the problem can be organic in nature. We are going to really try to stick with the diet from the book. My husband lost 20 pounds 3 years ago. However, I would like to find a good cookbook with tasty meals that are fast and easy. I like to cook but I don’t like the mess of cooking. I have a very tiny kitchen with absolutely no counter space. A stove that is 30+ years old and only 2 of the burners work. So if I do cook it has to be a one pan recipe. My husband doesn’t like tomatoes at all. I can’t eat cabbage, nuts, pork because I’m allergic to all of these items. He loves cabbage, nuts, pork. He’s almost 100% German ancestry. I’m almost 90% English/Irish ancestry. So he doesn’t like what I make and I really can’t eat what he likes. The dietitian said that corn is a starch and shouldn’t be used much. I grew up on a large farm and thought corn was extremely healthy and rich in vitamins. I really didn’t care for her ideas on food much. Can anyone please recommend a healthy cookbook? Thanks.

Hi,
I am trying to lose a few extra pounds and will be glad if any **fitness expert** here can give me a piece of advice.

I am overall healthy with normal metabolic rate, I try to keep my daily calories intake up to 1500 and exercise about 30 minutes a day, 5-6 days a week. With this lifestyle I lost about 1,8 kg (4 lb) in 1 month.

My question is, if I want to lose 4 kg / 9 lb in the next month (to reach my final goal), how much should I exercise a day? 60 minutes?

Food I eat is pretty healthy, every day : fiber-rich vegetables, 3 apples, egg or small poultry portion, oatmeal, nuts and olive oil in moderation, yogurts, 2 cups of green tea, tuna. keeping processed food to utmost minimum, almost no salt or sodium, obviously no trans-fats or saturated fats, no ready meals, etc. So my guess is that there is nothing wrong with the nutrition, it’s all about fitness right? Working by the computer I don’t get many opportunities to lose weight during the day but I’d also like to know if it’s possible to break a daily 1 hour session into two 30-minutes sessions or it won’t be the same?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Women with cravings…check it out!!!?

For many women, powerful food cravings for certain foods come with the territory during pregnancy. You’ve probably heard tales of loved ones being dispatched at all hours to search for a certain brand of bacon double cheeseburger or rocky road ice cream to quell an expectant mom’s desire. Perhaps you’ve felt an overwhelming urge to splurge firsthand.

Truth is, nobody is sure why some women have pregnancy food cravings. "Some experts say cravings, and their flip side, food aversions, are protective, even if there is no scientific data to back up that theory," says Siobhan Dolan, MD, assistant medical director of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation and assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology and women’s health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

For example, you may not feel like drinking alcohol when pregnant, which is beneficial since avoiding beer, wine, and other spirits fosters your baby’s mental and physical development.

Others think a pregnant woman’s preference for certain foods such as salt-laden potato chips is nature’s way of helping her meet her daily sodium quota. However, it’s highly unlikely that cells translate so-called nutrient shortfalls into food cravings. Longing for a particular food tends to distinguish pregnancy food cravings from cravings women have when they are not expecting.

Pregnancy Cravings Are in a Class by Themselves

So food cravings are probably all in your head, a product of pregnancy hormones. Hormonal shifts during pregnancy intensify sense of smell (which heavily influences taste) and are powerful enough to affect food choices.

"It’s possible that women who are feeling nauseous, bloated, tired, or crabby due to the effects of pregnancy hormones look for foods to increase their comfort level," says Elisa Zied, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. "Some women who deprive themselves when they’re not pregnant think of pregnancy as a time to treat themselves to foods they typically avoid."

When expecting, Zied favored foods she loved as a teen but ate far less often in the years leading up to her two pregnancies. A combination of kielbasa and melted cheese atop toasted English muffins were big with Zied during her first pregnancy. When due with her second child, she preferred Cheez-Its over anything else.

How does a nutrition professional who knows better manage cravings? By eating small portions of the lower-fat versions of her favorite foods. "When I wanted those foods, I really wanted them, so I gave in, always mindful of how much I was eating," she says.

Food Cravings Aren’t All Bad

The foods women tend to want are, in fact, good choices. Take dairy products, for example, rich in protein, calcium, and several other nutrients, which are among the top foods women want during pregnancy, according to the March of Dimes. When Dolan was pregnant, cranberry juice was all she wanted to drink. Fortified cranberry juice can be an excellent source of calcium or vitamin C and contains an array of other nutrients necessary during pregnancy.

Food cravings typically differ from pregnancy to pregnancy. They may also change from day to day. Don’t be surprised when the food you had to have yesterday repulses you today. Sometimes, a pregnancy changes food preferences permanently. After delivering, Dolan’s love of cranberry juice turned to distaste. "Now, I won’t even go near it," she says.

Some women find themselves with a yen for nonfood items, including ice, dirt, clay, paper, and even paint chips, a condition known as pica. Pica may signal iron deficiency. Expectant mothers may also get the urge to eat flour or cornstarch, which, despite being food items, are a problem in large amounts. Too much can lead to blocked bowels and crowd out the nutrients your baby needs by causing you to feel full. If you have any of these urges, resist eating the items you crave, and report them to your doctor right away.

No matter how strong your desire, steer clear of foods considered health risks for pregnant women and developing babies. These include:

Raw and undercooked seafood, meat, and eggs
Unpasteurized milk and any foods made from it, including Brie, feta, Camembert, Roquefort, and Mexican-style cheeses
Unpasteurized juice
Raw vegetable sprouts, including alfalfa, clover, and radish
Herbal teas
Alcohol

wanna losse weight?? tips here :))?

ok well you can try the raw food diet.
read this …
:))
What is the Raw Food Diet?
The raw food diet is a diet based on unprocessed and uncooked plant foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouts, seeds, nuts, grains, beans, nuts, dried fruit, and seaweed.

Heating food above 116 degrees F is believed to destroy enzymes in food that can assist in the digestion and absorption of food. Cooking is also thought to diminish the nutritional value and "life force" of food.

Typically, at least 75% of the diet must be living or raw.

What are the Benefits of the Raw Food Diet?
Proponents of the raw food diet believe it has numerous health benefits, including:
Increased energy

Improved skin appearance

Better digestion

Weight loss

Reduced risk of heart disease
The raw food diet contains fewer trans fats and saturated fat than the typical Western diet. It is also low in sodium and high in potassium, magnesium, folate, fiber and health-promoting plant chemicals called phytochemicals.

These properties are associated with a reduced risk of diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. For example, a study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that consumption of a raw food diet lowered plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations.

What are the Guidelines of the Raw Food Diet?
1. What can I eat?

Unprocessed, preferably organic, whole foods such as:
Fresh fruits and vegetables

Nuts

Seeds

Beans

Grains

Legumes

Dried fruit

Seaweed

Unprocessed organic or natural foods

Freshly juiced fruit and vegetables

Purified water

Young coconut milk
At least 75% of food consumed should not be heated over 116 degrees F.

2. What cooking techniques are used?

Specific cooking techniques make foods more digestible and add variety to the diet, including:
Sprouting seeds, grains, and beans

Juicing fruit and vegetables

Soaking nuts and dried fruit

Blending

Dehydrating food
3. What equipment can I use?
A dehydrator, a piece of equipment that blows air through food at a temperature of less than 116 degrees F.

A good-quality juice extractor for juicing fruit and vegetables

A blender, food processor, or chopper to save time

Large glass containers to soak and sprout seeds, grains, and beans

Mason jars for storing sprouts and other food
Side Effects

Some people experience a detoxification reaction when they start the raw food diet, especially if their previous diet was rich in meat, sugar, and caffeine. Mild headaches, nausea, and cravings can occur but usually last for several days.

Precautions
The raw food diet may not be appropriate for certain people, such as:
Children

Pregnant or nursing women

People with anemia

People at risk for osteoporosis - A Washington University study found that people following a raw food diet had lower bone mass. Bone turnover rates, however, were similar to the group that ate a standard American diet.
Considerable time, energy, and commitment is needed to be healthy on the raw food diet. Many of the foods are made from scratch. Some ingredients may be hard to find, such as Rejuvelac (the fermented liquid drained from sprouted grains), sprouted flour, date sugar, young coconut milk, carob powder and Celtic sea salt.

People must be aware that certain nutritional deficiencies can occur on the raw food diet, including:
Calcium

Iron

B12 – The Journal of Nutrition study found that a raw food diet increased levels of homocysteine due to vitamin B-12 deficiency.

Protein

Calories
Critics of the raw food diet say while it’s true that some enzymes are inactivated when food is heated, it doesn’t matter because the body uses its own enzymes for digestion. In addition, cooking makes certain phytochemicals easier to absorb, such as beta-carotene in carrots.

Another critique is that the human body has changed in response to eating cooked foods. Some of these changes are that are jaws and teeth have become smaller, our stomachs have shrunk, and our small intestines have grown longer, lengthening the digestive surface area.

According to other alternative diet theories, such as macrobiotics, Ayurveda, and traditional Chinese medicine, a raw-only diet may not be appropriate for people living in colder climates or for people with certain constitutional types.

Hi, I have a 2 and a half year old french bulldog with an extremely sensitive stomach. To give you all some background, when we first brought her home at 12 weeks she was on Royal Canine for puppies. After just a few weeks she basically stopped eating it and eventually we switched to Merricks Puppy Plate. At first she seemed to love that but also stopped eating it after a few weeks. We slowly changed her food over like we had read so I know that wasn’t the issue. She started getting real bad diarrhea and after some research we decided to try and switch to a raw diet of those frozen raw lamb patties. Once again she ate them at first but after a little while would not eat at all.

Again she was getting sick a lot and after numerous vet visits they recommended we try the Science ID or the Natural Balance sweet potato and venison since they said the raw food was way too rich for her. We tried the Science ID first and once again she seemed to love it for about two weeks and then would not eat unless she was completely starving. So then I tried the Natural Balance sweet potato and venison. Finally it seemed like we had a winner as she was having great stools and seemed to like the food. Low and behold after a nice run she stopped eating the food again. She also started having a ton of mucus in her stool and bad bouts of diarrhea off and on. Again we took her to the vet and had her stool tested with every test coming back fine.

So a month ago I started to mix in canned chicken into her kibble. I made sure to find the lowest sodium canned chicken there was and when i mixed it in she seemed to love it and would finish all of her food. Again we had a nice run where things seemed to go well but then the diarrhea and mucus came back and she has had a few days of vomiting over the past few weeks. Since the vomiting only occurred a few times over the course of a couple weeks and there has been no blood or diarrhea at the same time I have not brought her back to the vet.

When she does eat she seems to try and only eat the chicken and really doesn’t seem to like the Natural Balance sweet potato and venison kibble at all anymore. Is there a different kibble out there i should try or have I totally screwed her up by switching her food so much? I just really want her to be happy and healthy but just dont know what the right thing to do at this point is. Is it bad that I have been using canned chicken? I read that it should be ok and my vet said that it should be great. Someone else told me that chicken may be hard on her stomach and that i should use cooked ground beef instead. It just seems like everyone has a different opinion and I dont know what is the right way to go at this point. I have also thought about trying a different kind of Natural Balance like the duck and potato but am afraid that she will like it for about a month and then stop eating again.

Sorry for the super long-winded question but I just wanted to give as much detail as possible. Thanks in advance for any response!
