Pregnancy on Birth Control and Antibiotics?
I am sexually active.
I do not use a condom with my partner.
I am on Microgestin Fe 1/20
I had been taking Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium tablets since April 9th for 10 to 11 days.
Approximately April 17th - pinkish/red spotting for no more than a day.
April 21st to 22nd - faint light brownish spotting.
(On the 1st day of when a period should occur..Though I do tend to get them at the end of the placebo week for about 2 days and its usually red.)
I’ve been also experiencing what I believe to be pregnancy symptoms:
*Nausea
*Inability to sleep at night but exhausted during the day.
*Occasional random vomiting
*Emotional - crying a lot for idk why and feeling discouraged by my boyfriend.
*Breasts are sore
*Sensitive to smell and taste
*Really strange life like dreams
*Metal taste in my mouth - like I’m sucking on a coin.
*Headaches
*Very hot and sweaty - Especially while sleeping - I’m usually never sweaty.
*Chills randomly or rite after sweats
*Constipation with gas
I’ve taken at home pregnancy tests. Negative. Once it was inconclusive and more recently 2 have had horizontal lines from the chemicals traveling down the stick - never seen that before and idk if its normal.
My questions are:
1) What could the bleeding be; And have you or anyone you know experienced it?
2) Is there anything else besides pregnancy that may be causing these symptoms?
3) Is it possible to be pregnant and get a negative read on the test?
*I currently have a stubborn ear infection (hence the antibiotics).
Response to «????»,
I have been on birth control since I was 16. I’m 22 now. I just switched from Depo Provera to the pill about 9 months ago.
I haven’t been bleeding for 3 days straight.
On April 17th I had pinkish red bleeding that didn’t last longer than that day.
Yesterday I began spotting dark blood. This is the week that I would begin my period.
The past 2 or 3 months I haven’t gotten a period due to the BC. (Forgot to include that before.)
If I do get a period it is usually for one day at the end of the Placebo week.
The tests I’m taking expire next year.
I don’t know if the bleeding I had today was a period or not…
Which brings me to another question:
4) Is it possible to spot or have a period while pregnant?
* Never had any negative side effects from Depo Provera (besides having to take extra calcium).
* I have been to the Dr with multiple tests done when it comes to my hormones because of the Depo and everything is in "normal range".
*Technically I’m not due for my period until the weekend. - If it does come that’s usually when it does.
*I know what PMS feels like, but this time here are different factors.
*I forgot to mention my boyfriend didn’t ejaculate inside of me - to the best of out knowledge - but after we were done having sex a semen like substance, (It even smelt and taste like semen) was left behind. My secretions during that time were clear and very slippery and stretchy.
Thanks to everyone for your answers. Looks like the best thing for me to do is retest in a week or so and get a blood test done either way.
If you can still add to this question, please do so. Are there any conditions that may give off the same symptom as pregnancy?

Hello. I’ve taken the pill, and have taken antibiotics also. I haven’t gotten pregnant, but only because my doctors always warned me that the antibiotic could cancel out the birth control, so I always used a backup method or avoided sex. Your doctor should have told you the interactions, if you weren’t planning a pregnancy. But I do have some information for you that could help. [[How long have you been on the pill?]]
1)The bleeding could be because you are taking the pill and an antibiotic. It’s called "breakthrough bleeding". It’s not heavy like a period, but its spotting, and it varies on how long it lasts and when it comes and goes. Sounds to me as if that’s what it is. When you are pregnant, you have "implantation bleeding", which is a teensy spot of pinkish reddish blood, when you wipe. And it doesn’t last days at a time. As you said you have been experiencing spotting for about 3 days.
2) Besides pregnancy, yes, the pill and antibiotic can be making you feel sick also! The hormones in the pill can really make you sick, any little change in your system, or any medication can alter the effects and make you go crazy. I get those symptoms all the time hun. And then I get my period lol. So I know it’s just my hormones messing with my body.
3) Yes, it’s sometimes possible to become pregnant and have a negative test. There are those shows now, "I didn’t know I was pregnant". Where they claim their tests were negative, etc. Are the pregnancy tests you are taking expired? The only way to know for sure, is to wait for your period to come. If it doesn’t arrive, then get a blood test done at the doctors office. They’ll be able to tell you for sure if you are pregnant or not. And then go from there.
BTW, so did you get a period or not? Or you aren’t due yet? Sorry I didn’t think you specified, and if you did, I’m blind lol.
Hope this information helps, if you need to know anything else, I’ll edit my answer. Best wishes to you.
edit: Whew! I feel sorry for you, your situation seems like no fun, I’ve been through it before and it’s yucky! It seems as if your cycle is very messed up especially because you haven’t even gotten a period for the past few months. I’ve heard it’s normal sometimes coming off of the depo shot. Usually, most (not all) but most women have a very hard time conceiving after coming off the depo. It can make you temporarily (sometimes permanently) infertile or give you bad side effects from coming off, and sometimes takes 6-12mths before leaving your body. This could be another reason for your problems.
In my opinion, I’d blame everything directly on hormones, and quite possibly your antibiotic too. I think you should let your doctor know, maybe you need a different pill. I’ve had to switch before because some brands made me very sick and made me have breakthrough bleeding. And also, I didn’t mean you bled 3 days straight, I meant you said you had spotting on the 17th, 21st, & 22nd. (which yet again also makes me think it’s your pill, not pregnancy)
4) It’s very rare to have a period while you are pregnant, not impossible but extremely rare. Usually that’s the first sign of pregnancy in women a missed period, but every body is different! The pill you are on can even make your period super light, and sometimes not even arrive! Which sucks because it makes you think your pregnant, but your not. If you continue to spot, and start to have abdominal pains you should see a doctor, you might have a tubal or ectopic pregnancy. Since you know your cycle, and when you should’ve gotten your period, I feel like your tests would’ve probably been positive by now if you were pregnant. You can try a different brand of test maybe? And make sure you are testing with your first morning urine. That’s when the hcg pregnancy hormone is it’s strongest. Wait a few more days and then test again. Like I mentioned above, if your still having problems, say next week and you still believe you might be pregnant, see a doctor to ease your mind, they’ll give you a blood test, which will confirm everything.
Again, it sounds like it’s PMS and a bad case of messed up hormones, and your pill. It can be due to stress also if you have a lot of things going on, and are worried about yourself right now. And the depo, that really messes you up too! [[btw, how long did were you on the shot?]] Honestly, I don’t think your pregnant.. and hun let your doctor know, he/she can help you, so call them and tell them what you told Y!A. Hope this helps you! =)
edit2: If weeks go by and your still showing your symptoms, you can repeat the test weekly until you are satisfied you are not pregnant and they continue negative. Meanwhile, talk to your boyfriend about a reliable method of birth control you can both live with since you don’t want to go through this kind of stress regularly - that alone can mess up your hormones.
A few more options that I didn’t mention, that could cause the same symptoms…
-You didn’t mention your age, but perhaps you are perimenopausal. This can last from 5-15 years before menopause sets in.
-Prolactinoma
-Low weight
-Rapid weight loss
-Excessive dieting
-Anorexia
-Starvation
-Bulimia
-Low body fat
-Female athlete syndrome
-Excessive exercise
-Weight gain
-Poor diet
-Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (pcos)
-Liver or Kidney problem
- I dont want to scare you but it could also be hepatitis or HIV cause those are the symptoms.
You should probably get a blood test done. Antibiotics do lessen the effectiveness of birth control pills so it’s very possible you could be pregnant. If you had spotting on the 17th, that was probably implantation bleeding and it’s still quite soon to get a positive on an HPT. Wait a few more days and try another test.
1. bleeding could be implantation bleeding…thats when the egg implants itself onto the uterus. and some women have period like bleedings throughout their pregnancy.
2. Symptoms sound like a pregnancy to me. Part of it might also be because of your ear infection.
3. Yes, you can be pregnant and have a negative pregnancy test. Happens when your hormone levels aren’t high enough yet. Wait a week or so and try again or go to the GYN and have a blood test done.
I’m in the same boat you’re in! Same symptoms, different BC.
Antibiotics definitely can decrease the effectiveness of BC!
Amoxicyllin- Class B* Controlled studies done on animals in reproduction do not indicate risk to the fetus.
* No adequate and well-controlled studies done on pregnant women.
Clavulinate- Class B* Controlled studies done on animals in reproduction do not indicate risk to the fetus.
* No adequate and well-controlled studies done on pregnant women.
It looks like if you are pregnant you won’t really have to worry about birth defects from meds, you could also just be late on you cycle or it could be a uterine cyst or ectopic pregnancy. The safest thing to do would be to have a visit with your health care professional.
Good luck!
I just started taking the pill a month and a half ago, but am not on antibiotics. And I have had all those symptoms and a bloody nose the other night for no reason (I’ve only had one before in my 32 years, and it was from being hit in the nose). But I started having symptoms three days after having unprotected sex, and have taken 4 tests….all came back negative, except one which was VERY faint. I think I am going to the doctor for a blood test myself, cause I just FEEL like I am pregnant. I feel very "different", and have never had a child before.
I wish you luck, cause the store bought tests did nothing but confuse me more!!!! Anyone who can answer you is a help to me as well. I hope we can find some answers.
