What can I ask the doc about nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fatigue?
Hi there,
First off, I have been to my family doctor 3 times, and the hospital once. I got food poisoning on mother’s day, and I STILL HAVE nausea and occasional vomiting and diarrhea (3.5 weeks).
I have been off work for weeks, unpaid medical leave.
I plan to ask for a referral to a specialized doctor in gastro… but what else might be going on? What questions should I be asking?
- All blood work has returned normal, with the exception of a low potassium value (because of all the vomiting I had). Urine test showed traces of ketones and bilirubin, but the 2nd test for bilirubin was negative.
- I have had an abdominal ultrasound that only showed free-fluid around the ovaries. Pap test was normal. Nothing with my appendix.
- Had a barium test with x-rays today, then immediately threw up the barium after the test was done.
- I’ve lost 14 lbs. in 3 weeks.
- I have only been able to eat baby food, mashed yams, white saltine crackers, applesauce, veggie broth, arrowroot cookies. I have been drinking water, gatorade, flat ginger ale and 7-up.
- I am feeling tired and get winded easily, but mostly because I can’t eat properly, so I am feeling sick and weak.
- I have been taking anti-nausea medication.
- I have tested and am not pregnant.
- I take nexium for gastritis, but this pain and vomiting is in a whole different galaxy than my previous heartburn problems.
I am so ill, so frustrated, and just hoping someone out there might be able to suggest something I could look into, or question about. Thanks in advance for any sensitive and thoughtful responses.

I know how you feel! I have all the same symptoms as you except vomiting. Have you been tested for parasites, celiac disease or other food allergies, IBD (such as crohn’s)? Have you had an abdominal ct, endoscopy, or colonoscopy? Zofran and Reglan are great medicines for nausea. Morphine is the only thing that will phase my pain. Good luck! Hope this helps! =)
