All medications for hypertension are notorious for unnecessary side effects, especially diuretics since they put you at high risk for kidney stones. Don't negate your doctors orders, but there are some natural ways to treat high blood pressure. Make sure you are getting enough calcium and potassium. Omega-3's are helpful as well. Make sure your diet is well rounded and consistent and try to get some exercise, especially cardio. Anytime you have a question about your medications, whether it be the effects or concerns, make sure to talk to your doctor. Best of Luck!

Everyone has different tolerances for these meds and until you try one of them, you won't know. Most commonly used is hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) but a small number of people get leg cramps from this. There is then spironolactone which a lot of people can tolerate but cannot be used with certain blood pressure medications. And then, there is Lasix (furosemide) which many people take but which can cause low potassium levels. Your doctor has to weigh the side effects against which one he thinks is compatible with your blood pressure medication.
